In favorable weather conditions, the coastal areas of Sagar and Naf rivers of Cox's Bazar 7 upazila have yielded a bumper crop of naturally extracted salt. Salt farmers are encouraged as they are getting fair price of salt and the bumper yield of the current season has put a smile on the face of the farmers.
Ignoring the severe drought and intense heat, the salt producing farmers of the coastal area of Cox's Bazar are in the field and have left a record of 63 years of salt production. The natural adverse favorable environment has led to over-target salt production.
According to basic information, the end of the salt season is a couple of weeks away. This year, 22 lakh 39 thousand metric tons have been produced so far on 68 thousand 357 acres of land on the coast. Potentially, at least 4 to 5 lakh metric tons of natural salt will be produced.
22 lakh 32 thousand 890 metric tons of salt was produced in 2023.
This domestic salt industry has been producing salt since 1960 in about 66 thousand 291 acres of coastal area of Cox's Bazar Sadar, Teknaf, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, Edgao, Chakria and Banshkhali upazilas.
In this season, compared to the last season, 64 thousand metric tons of salt has been produced so far.
With this salt industry in Cox's Bazar district, about five lakh people including registered farmers and one and a half lakh laborers involved in the production of salt fields in the district are engaged in this industry in various ways.
